Mayor Hill-Lewis visits Elsies River rental units maintenance work

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Councillor Carl Pophaim, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, were in Elsies River as Public Housing maintenance officials completed maintenance and upgrade work at the City’s affordable Community Residential Units (CRUs). The City is investing more than R1,2 billion over the next few years at CRUs across the metro to carry out maintenance, repairs and upgrades.

'We were so excited to visit our Howick Place, Hurleyvale Court, Holmdene Court and Hibberdene Court units in Elsies River to see for ourselves the difference our maintenance work has on tenants’ lives. Our maintenance teams are making their way across the metro to perform important work on CRUs in various areas. We recently launched a Public Housing campaign focused on enhancing safety and carrying out maintenance in a respectful manner at our units. We want to significantly improve the quality of life for our residents by creating safer and more comfortable living environments. We are committed to enhancing the units and improving the living standards of our residents,’ said Councillor Pophaim.

Ongoing work includes:

• Carpentry - secure and repair gutters, fabrication and installations of new sink cupboards
• Bricklaying - repairs to existing concrete stairs, brick/block structures and installation of additional washing lines
• Welding - repairs to refuse huts and staircase hand rails
• Painting - painting of graffiti on flats and refuse huts, and replacing of broken window panes
• Electrical - repairs to area lighting on property, and repairs to faulty plug sockets and light switches in various units
• Plumbing - jetting of sewer lines on property and domestic plumbing issues in various units
